Who we are
Waste Industry (wasteindustry.co.uk) is published by WasteLinks Marketplace Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17411275). We are the controller of the personal data described in this notice. You can contact us about privacy at any time through our contact page.
When you read the site
We do not use cookies or similar technology to follow you. To count our readers, when a page loads our server turns your IP address and browser details into a one-way code, mixed with a random value that is replaced every day. The code lets us tell how many different people read a page that day. We do not store your IP address with it, and once the day's random value has been deleted the code can no longer be linked to anyone.
What we keep are totals: which pages were read, how far down the page people scrolled, how long the page was open, the website that sent readers to us and whether they used a phone, tablet or computer. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in understanding what our readers read, so we can run the site and report results to advertisers.
Like every website, our server may also record technical details such as IP addresses in its security and error logs. We use these only to keep the site working and safe, and they are deleted automatically after a few weeks.
The newsletter
If you sign up, we keep your email address (and your name and company, if you give them), with a record of what you agreed to and when. We send you an email to confirm the subscription before we send anything else. Our lawful basis is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time with the unsubscribe link in every email. After you unsubscribe we keep your address on a do-not-email list, only so that we never email you again by mistake.
Messages and news tips
When you use one of our forms we keep what you send so we can reply, follow up a story or deal with your request. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in running a newsroom and answering the people who write to us. We treat news tips as confidential and never reveal a source without their agreement. We delete messages after two years unless they are part of a story, a correction or a legal matter.
Reader polls
To stop the same person voting twice, we use the same daily one-way code described above. Votes are stored as totals and are never linked to you.
Adverts
We sell adverts directly to businesses. We count how often each advert is shown, seen and clicked using the same cookie-free method, and advertisers receive totals only. We do not share readers' personal data with advertisers.
Who else handles data for us
- Hetzner Online GmbH hosts the website on servers in Nuremberg, Germany.
- Our email delivery provider sends the newsletter and confirmation emails on our behalf. We will name it here before we start sending.
- YouTube: where a page shows a video, we use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode, so YouTube (Google) receives information about you only if you press play.
- Share buttons are plain links: nothing is sent to a social network unless you click one.
Where a provider is outside the UK, the transfer is covered by UK adequacy regulations (as for Germany and the rest of the European Economic Area) or by the safeguards UK law requires, such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement.
Your rights
You have the right to ask for a copy of your personal data, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to or restrict how we use it, to receive it in a portable form and to withdraw your consent. Contact us through our contact page and we will reply within one month.
Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, please tell us first. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, telephone 0303 123 1113.
Changes to this notice
We will update this page if anything changes, and show the date of the latest version at the top.
