Waste Industry is a news site for the UK waste and recycling trade. We cover the councils, carriers, brokers, processors, producers and regulators that keep the country's waste moving, and the rules that shape their work.

What we cover

  • Policy and regulation: digital waste tracking, Simpler Recycling, packaging EPR, the deposit return scheme, permits and licensing, landfill tax and the other charges the trade pays.
  • Recycling: materials, markets and the plants that sort and reprocess them.
  • Collections and haulage: household and commercial collections, skip hire, vehicles and fleets.
  • Treatment and energy: energy from waste, anaerobic digestion, materials recovery facilities and landfill.
  • Business, jobs and people: contracts, deals, appointments, training and vacancies.

Official updates, as they are published

Every few hours we bring in new announcements, guidance, consultations and legislation from GOV.UK and legislation.gov.uk, from Defra, the Environment Agency, HMRC and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. These are published as the government wrote them, with a link to the original at the end, and contain public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Our own reporting and analysis is written by our newsroom and carries its author's name.

Who we are

Waste Industry is published by WasteLinks Marketplace Ltd, which also runs the WasteLinks marketplace. When we write about WasteLinks, the article says so at the top. Adverts and sponsored content are always labelled.
